Wednesday, December 23, 2009: short (family)

This is the point in a parent’s life when having one’s children come home for the holidays becomes the best present of all.  Until now, I’ve thought of myself as a mother bear, fiercely attentive and protective when my sons were growing up, but equally willing to let them go off and live their adult lives. I refocused attention on my own life, separate and independent, I gave support and kept in touch, but I was never the helicopter mother, constantly hovering in the background once my sons left to live on their own.

I’ve watched them join the military and scatter to different parts of the country. I can be thankful they are all state-side this year, and we have the option of getting together at Christmas. Next Christmas there are no promises of family reunions.

This is the year the image of Momma Bear and her cubs gets retired. I can’t picture mother bears in the wild being so overjoyed with the idea of seeing their offspring’s return.
