Monday, November 29, 2010: Wrap-Around Heaven

Today is our last day at the cabin before heading back to the city. After days of overcast skies, after days that simply went from dark to darker, yesterday the sun finally came out. The clouds hung in ribbons in the western sky. We waited last night as the sky flirted with pastel tones, as it teased us into hoping we might enjoy an impressive sunset. The clouds dispersed. The colors faded before they had a chance to develop past a faint tint.

"A shame," said my husband. Our view of sunrise and sunset is blocked by trees, houses, and hills when we are in our city home. Being at the cabin, with its abundance of windows (being here especially at this time of the year) is the best chance for us to be at a resting point when the sun transitions, for us to stop in our activities and sit quietly, marveling at the beauty.

"Perhaps next visit," was the only comment to console us both. After all, it was just a minor disappointment.

Not so today. As if nature wanted to compensate us this morning, I awoke to a gorgeous sunrise. Like a kid awaking to Christmas presents, I excitely dragged my husband to the window.

"Isn't that amazing? Can you see how far the colors extend?"

It was more than a stunning view of the eastern sky. The warm peachs and golden orange reflected so perfectly off clouds positioned so perfectly that every window in the cabin had a view of the sunrise: north, south, east, west.

It was like being wrapped in heaven. I wish everyone, at least once in their life, could feel the simple, the exquisite magic of a 360 degree sunrise.
