Wednesday, May 11, 2011: (Alfred Billings Street Quote on Nature)

"Nature is man's teacher.  She unfolds her treasures to his search, unseals his eye, illumes his mind, and purifies his heart; an influence breathes from all the sights and sounds of her existence."  ~Alfred Billings Street´╗┐

For some unknown reason I decided impulsively to throw my pocket camera in the van as we dashed off to attend our last dinner presentation of a birding and nature festival. R. had taken along his binoculars, thinking we might wander outside before the meeting (last year's location offered grand views of the New River Gorge and occassional raptors sailing past). Yet it quickly became obvious to both of us that this meeting would be held entirely inside. My camera remained in the van.

Who can say what compelled us to leave in the middle to the presentation, to drive back to our cabin without even saying a final goodbye to our new friends? The reason became evident as we drove the last stretch of road to the cabin.  This was my gift from the heavens---an incredible sunset, one that could never be accurately caught by any camera. We stopped the van and simply stood by the side of the road, drinking in the beauty.

In moments like this I am overwhelmed. There is a closeness and unity with the divine that comes without effort, without the need to focus attention. All that exists is a profound sense of being blessed, reminded once again that I am part of it all. With that comes a great peace and calmness, an inner joy that melts away the weight of years.
